[edit] Problem Addressed by the Project

“The Brady Bunch” has provided each and every one of us with the opportunity to learn about the joys and trials of blending two families in the 1970’s. Unfortunately, other than the rare spin-off TV show or reunion movie, the only chance we really have of sharing in their experiences is to locate the episodes that we truly love the most. But how can we be expected to remember, out of over 115 episodes, which one it is we are looking for? Sure there are some websites that list the episodes with a brief description for each, but who wants to look through all the noise of these other episodes in search of the one true favorite? We all know that Marcia got hit in the face with a football, but in what season, what episode, and who threw it? These are the questions that we need answers to; these are the questions that are so hard to answer.

[edit] The Project Itself

We will begin by manually annotating an episode index, dividing this task amongst the three of us. This annotated index will include lead characters, supporting cast and special guest stars, and any other category of individuals we discover in the process. Once we compile the necessary object terms to build the Brady ontology, we can then proceed to a second annotation. On the second time through, we will include next to each episode the individuals that were featured as the lead focus. Once we have begun building our ontology, this annotation will be integral to our correctly defining the episodes as the individual domains for each range of events. We will then list events that happened throughout all the seasons that are of major importance, of which there are many. We’ll also be writing down catchphrases and memorable lines of certain characters. We will use all of these annotations to start piecing together connections between instances and characters. After the manual annotation and data collecting are done we will then move on to building the ontology in Protégé. This is where the true relationships will be connected, linking characters to situations, with the end goal of making it searchable via the actors, events, classic lines, and other pertinent categories. In the end, we plan on delivering a portfolio of our work, including the manual annotations of the Brady index, the ontology describing the relationships between individuals for all the seasons of “The Brady Bunch,” and, at the very least, an outline of how this ontology can be made searchable on the internet. To accomplish all of this, we will be meeting twice a week to outline our individual work and progress, discuss new problems that may arise, and integrate our discoveries into the main body of our project.

[edit] Minimal, Optimal, and Future Project Achievements

1. Minimal: To have the framework of the ontology completed and debugged, with some information inputted and related successfully. Have working knowledge of website interface design and how to link website to ontology, e.g. plug-ins. Compile our work into a group portfolio and give rehearsed presentation. 2. Optimal: To have the ontology complete and all the data represented within it., with a web page scripted to make the ontology relatively searchable by keyword. 3. Future: To have a metadata set for the classes and relationships in the ontology that is searchable by the web page, and to have advanced search tools to more clearly define the constraints of the search.
