[edit] 80s Robo Thriller

80s Robo Thriller is the working title for a sci-fi/horror/psychological-thriller about issues of robots, A.I., computers and advancing technology set in a 1980s environment

[edit] PLOT

In a time when computerized intelligence was considered to be an impending apocalypse (despite the limitations of Bondwell computers and Atari systems), a man defies morals when his endeavors with the machines ultimately challenge humanity with Spock-like logic that violates the complicated thought process that is responsible for basic human ethics. What will become of the future when machines have responsibilities?

Approximately 7,893,921 films and TV programs have dealt with the issue of A.I. reasoning and this project is no different… Or is it? Yes it is!

I perceive this as a slow paced, not too active thriller. However, I hope to have an over active camera (at some points) and I want lots of interesting cinematography—close ups, far shots, quick cuts, long cuts, tilted shots, focus shifts, high contrast and low contrast (not too low), colorful shots, and perhaps semi-sepia tone shots. This movie consists of old computers, robots, nerds, and cool 1980s sets.

[edit] CHARACTERS

Our primary protagonist is somewhat of a hacker who lives in a 1980s Rock’n Roll world and who uses his skills of ruling the game world to his advantage.

Our primary antagonist is a video game maker who wants to design robots with his technology. There is also a robot that embodies robo-psychology. (“Is this robot good or evil?” That’s pretty much what this film deals with.)

Our primary robot is an ambiguous entity (good or evil?). At times it may seem nice or inhumane but with further realization we notice that morals, humanity, goodness, and evilness is irrelevant with robots—at least this robot.

[edit] VISUAL TREATMENT

I plan on storyboarding and testing shots for this film. I hope to film more than I need so when I simplify and shorten the film I have a nice selection to choose from.

I plan on researching 1980s computing information and vocabulary. I want to make the movie feel authentic by avoiding making up ridiculous terms and concepts.

[edit] SPECIAL ISSUES

WOPR computer from Wargames.
WOPR computer from Wargames.

I am considering different set locations (mostly inside). The main locations are: “Computer Laboratory” and “80s Bedroom”. Special FX will be mostly done in production (so not much of computer FX). However, I will be making some fake computer DOS programs (8 bit styled) that resemble the 1980s computers.

I will attempt to make a robot that’s not too corny, but that still has a 1980s clunky feel. I will probably not use servo motors or gears, but instead make it as a large puppet.

[edit] FORMAT

This will be filmed (actually recorded) in DV (DVX 100a) and potentially Hi8.

[edit] SKILLS

  • I hope to learn how to operate Digital Cameras on a professional level (particularly the DVX).
  • I want to learn how to use color correction to its full potential as well as other professional editing techniques.
  • I also hope to refine the art of scoring (I prefer to score the music to fit the movie, rather then going the easy route and finding music—and avoiding copyright issues).
  • My main struggle (that I perceive) is sound design—I wish to make a very nice soundtrack (in the SFX sense).
  • I also plan on experimenting with different light set ups and attempting to figure out a way to make consistent lighting that looks good (so I won’t need extreme color correction).
