[edit] The Pine Cone

The Pine Cone

I hope to make a semi-autobiographical short narrative about teenage sexuality. This will be a critical look at a teenagers sexual exploration through conversation with friends. It will resemble the ‘Coming of Age’ genre. I want to address the obvious double standard represented in this genre. Usually young men in these stories have their coming of age journey through sexual exploration, whereas young women take these same journeys, but it usually takes the form of having a crush and getting a boyfriend. I believe this reinforces the stereotype that all teenage boys want is to have sex and all teenage girls want is to find love.

I will represent this through four main characters. Emer, Sarah, Dale, and Nick. Emer is the under experienced tom boy who is often looked at as a feminist. She gets offended when she is expected to fulfill gender stereotypes. She is very sarcastic and her humor is very crude. She is a loyalist to her local diner, the Pine Cone Café, and avoids changing her daily routine. Sarah is the overtly sexual one who is really into ‘the game.’ She often offers advice to Emer about how to get guys. She is definitely the ‘pretty’ one and throughout the story, it is revealed she has more insecurities than she allows others to see. Dale is the play-boy. He is smooth, decently good looking, and confident. He may come off as misogynistic, but really does appreciate his female friends, and throughout the story it evolves that he cares for the women he dates more than people expect. Nick is the more awkward hopeless romantic. He is ‘in love’ with Sarah (and every other girl he meets), but desperately wants to make her something that she isn’t. He wants girls to fulfill all his expectations, and often accuses Emer of being unfeminine when she embodies masculine characteristics. The entirety of this story takes place in a local diner where the gang hangs out in all the time.

The tone is generally light and sarcastic. Stylistically, the feel of the film will be intimate and personal. It will be comprised of warm light and close ups. It will be mostly dialogue driven as 90% of the story takes place in a booth at a diner. There will also be sporadic ‘flash backs’ or cut a ways. I want this to be a semi realistic representation of four 17 year olds on an average Tuesday night. Although in the context of the ‘Coming of Age’ genre, the main characters will come to learn something about themselves by the end of the night, but I don’t want it to be overtly moralistic. It will explore themes that are anti promiscuity yet pro self awareness and education. I want this piece to explore a dialogue and acting driven narrative, something I have never done before. I also want relatable characters and experiences people can identify with. I want the piece to be between 20 - 30 minutes. I have already completed a first draft of the screen play.
