Given triange ABC with opposite sides abc
Law of Sines: sin(A)/a = sin(B)/b = sin(C)/c (Know 2 angles, 1 side)
Law of Cosines: c^2 = b^2 + a^2 – 2abcos(C) (Know 2 sides, 1 angle)
Example: You want to find how far it is across a river. You spot a tree on the far shore. You get 2 sticks and put them 100 feet apart along the near shore. You measure the angle between these sticks and the tree. Use the Law of Sines to find the distance across the river.
Example 2: Plane A and B take off from St Louis. Plane A is heading to Chicago and Plane B is heading to Denver. There is an angle of 40 degrees between their routes. After an hour, Plane A has flown 450 miles and Plane B has flown 560 miles. Use the law of Cosines to find how far apart the planes are after 1 hour.
