2/7/10 Spring Quarter Info: This week we decided that next quarter’s subjects will be Galois Theory, Probability, Complex Analysis, and Mathematical Fiction (seminar). Here are the books we’ll be using:
-
Galois Theory: no book – I’ll hand out course notes.
-
Complex Analysis: this Complex Analysis Packet.
-
Probability: the 7th edition of Sheldon Ross’s A First Course in Probability - note that that’s not the current edition (and is therefore a little cheaper), so you won’t be able to buy it in the TESC bookstore.
-
Mathematical Fiction: Abbott’s Flatland; Burger’s Sphereland; Stoppard’s Arcadia; Auburn’s Proof; Jonke’s Geometric Regional Novel; Lightman’s Einstein’s Dreams; Frucht’s Imaginary Numbers. Feel free to use any editions of these texts that you can find.
