About

This site is a hub providing information and academic research on The Dick Van Dyke Show‘s origins and innovations. From 1961, when the first episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show aired, creator Carl Reiner used a combination of historic moral and entertainment values and progressive ideas and content to gently push the envelope in ways that opened the American audience to a receptive, appreciative state. In his portrayal of men, women, religion, and race, Reiner made it clear that one could use basic sitcom formula and traditional set-ups to revolutionize media treatment of hot button subjects. These ideas are expounded upon in the research report linked in this site, supported by an annotated bibliography and several online videos of archival material made available at the links to the side of the page.
