About Page

This interdisciplinary study-abroad program focuses on the introduction to Taiwan, listed by Lonely Planet as one of Asia’s most diverse destinations. We will travel to the beautiful tropical island, one of the four Asian Tigers, to participate in an immersion program at two universities in Taiwan. The university experience in the city of Taipei (the capital of the Republic of China), and Tainan (a historical yet modern technology gem) will offer Chinese language studies, economic development updates, sustainable business tours, and hands on cultural experience with painting, calligraphy, Kung Fu, and folk arts.

Culture competency is an essential skill for those interested in international trade or intercultural communication. We will learn about Taiwan’s investment in latest information technology, improved sustainable agriculture and ecological development, which made Taiwan an international trading powerhouse with impressive foreign exchange reserve.

Taiwan embraces its diverse ethnic culture and religions. Expect to experience Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, indigenous and folk faiths, and Christianity while taking notes about the various ethnic groups represented here. In addition, students will visit a variety of geological landscapes, tour local socially responsible companies and businesses, green industrial parks, as well as experience Taiwan’s diverse ecosystems. There will be guided tours to the National Palace Museum, as well as visits to historical sites. Taste authentic Taiwanese and Chinese cuisine as well as local snack food at night markets.

Translators will be provided during program activities, so you do not need to speak Chinese to join this program. Students of Chinese, however, will have ample opportunity to learn and practice.

During the first session of the summer, students will travel with the class for a three week study trip. All will be encouraged to document the trip. For students who register for the 12 credits option, you can continue the learning through seminars, film viewing & discussions, and documentary making in the second session. Portfolio including video and/or photo blog documentary can be developed from the study trip also.

Enroll for eight credits for first session only, and 12 credits for full session.beitouhotspring
