Samuel, Lawrence R. Brought to You By: Post War Television Advertising and the American Dream

Austin: University of Texas Press, 2002.

This book covers both advertisement techniques over the span of almost two decades and the contextual history of the time. I found this book incredibly useful when searching for documents and clarification pertaining to early 1950′s product placement and consumer persuasion. This book also gave good contextual information.

Newell, Jay. Salmon, Charles T. Chang, Susan. The Hidden History of Product Placement

Broadcast Education Association: Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, 2006.

This article covered and described the history on product placement. The article also went into specifics on how and why product placement was and is used. This Article was useful to me because it gave specific examples of product placement with in narrow time frames.

Packard, Vance. The Hidden Persuaders

New York: David McKay Company, inc, 1957.

This book was used as my bread and butter. It is extremely detailed in all Market and Social research studies. It also sets a very rigid contextual time frame. I used this book when looking into persuasive marketing and the research backing it up.

Schwartz, Richard A. How Film and Television Black Lists Worked

Miami: Florida International University, 1999.

This article focused on the way in which persons in the television medium were blacklisted. It covers the Congressional hearing and the organizations involved with the creation and enforcement of black listing. I found this article particularly useful when researching early 1950′s television black listing and how it effected mass option.

Barnouw, Erik. Tube of Plenty: The Evolution of American Television

New York: Oxford University Press, 1990

This book goes in depth and into extreme detailed descriptions of all the events in correlation of the invention of the television. This includes all laws passed, research and development, networks, patents, television personalities, etc. This book was one of my main sources. I used the material from this book to find both broad and specific information pertaining to the television.

McDonald, Fred J. One Nation Under Television: The Rise and Decline of Network T.V.

New York: Pantheon Books, 1990

This book details main key points from the birth of television to the early 1990′s. The text has more expansive detail about the earlier days on television (1940′s-1960′s). This is particularly viable to my paper due to the time frame.

Alexander, Alison. Benjamin, Louis M. Hoerrner, Keisha. Roe, Darrell. “We’ll Be Back In a Moment”: A Content Analysis of Advertisements in Children’s Television in the 1950s

Journal of Advertising, Volume XXVII, Number 3, Fall 1998

This Article covers the evolution of advertising in children’s programing. It successfully explores the formative years of television specifically children’s programing. This article was very useful to me when looking for information on early use of persuasive advertising on children.

Spiel, Lynn. TV By Design

Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2008

This book covers the most prolific television designs through the mid twentieth century. Taking the avant garde and mixing it with the new medium on television.

The expo on specific key figures of the early years of television was very helpful to my research.
