Specifications
Cornish is a small, but well renowned, private college in Seattle. It is an Arts college.
The number of current degree seeking undergrads at Cornish, according to [College Board], is approximately 850.
Cornish's library strictly adheres to the school's size and academic interests. Thus, its collection is focused on the studies of the college. There is clear communication between the classes offered and the resources available at the library with very little money spared on the non-topical. For example, their collection of scripts rivals the size, per item, of their fiction and non-fiction sections.
The library is located in the Main Campus Center, which houses the mess hall, class rooms, and offices as well. The Main Campus Center's address is 1000 Lenora Street Seattle, WA room 205 (second floor).
Construction
- Lights
The lighting in the library is mostly artificial. There are small windows which do not lend a great amount of natural light. It is commonly the most lit room in the Main Campus Center. One's eyes have to adjust when they enter through the double doors.
- Floor space
Cornish's library is physically compact, but is organized to fit as many sources as it can. The library is separated into two sections, based on floor level. Fiction, Non fiction, Scripts/Plays, and circulation are on the first rise. A ramp provides access to the second rise which contains periodicals and the computer lab.The floor space is minimal in areas that are unlikely to be crowded and more forgiving in areas that are well trafficked. The space along and in between the stacks would be uncomfortable if two patrons were looking for items on opposing/parallel bays. The only private room in the library is a computer lab that can be reserved. The area in front of the joint circulation/reference desk is spacious.
- Seating
There is very little seating in the Cornish library. There are small chairs on the second rise near the periodicals. There is no seating for study groups. The only provided study spots seem to be formed for independent study, with the exception of the computer lab.
