Specifications

This branch of the Seattle Public Library is small and has a well focused collection which is developed to serve as a community resource. It differs from the main SPL in that the greater amount of its collection is dedicated to recreation. It provides resources for study, but these are in the form of computers and quiet spaces. The physical space and materials in the Capitol Branch lend more aid to the enjoyment of reading and learning as opposed to serious study. It is located at 425 Harvard Ave. E. Seattle, WA 98102.

Construction

  • Lights

The light in this branch is stunning. There are floor to ceiling windows on the north and south walls. The windows provide a great amount of natural light. The artificial lighting is not abrasive. The fixtures hang from the ceiling and provide soft, centralized illumination.

  • Floor space

There is plenty of floor space despite the amount of book shelves and desks. The furniture is positioned in a welcoming manner. When one enters the library on the first level, a series of important shelves (holds and new arrivals) form a large "V" with the wide mouth positioned at the front doors; the base providing a funnel to the public computers/ the center of the library.

From there, an interesting divide occurs. The East side of the library is more compact and has all of the materials for the younger (pre-K to YA) patrons. The West side of the library is more spacious and houses the fiction,non-fiction, and film sections. The center of the library, as stated prior, contains more of the "universal" materials...such as computers, seating, and comics.

The administrative offices of the library are placed on the second floor, along with some public spaces for events.

There is a free parking garage under the library proper and can be accessed via stairs near the first floor entrance.

  • Seating

Seating is abundant in this library! There are study desks in the center, in the east corner, and lining the west wall (in the form of comfy window benches). The youth area has low-to-the-floor seating.
