Pycnopodia helianthoides at Clallum Bay

Spectacular example of a local sea star, Pycnopodia helianthoides. Although this species is probably less susceptible to the direct effects of acidification, it could be impacted by losses of mussel beds in rocky intertidal habitats. This individual was spotted during a field excursion to Clallam Bay along the south shore of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
