Pop-ositions

Chapter 1:

Goa trance is inspired by ignorant appropriation of Indian culture by hippie-tourists.

Chapter 2: The arrival and immigration of the Vietnamese to the US after the influence by exile and anticommunism has initiated the production of Viet Kieu, which has now formed and evolved in multiple ways. With the enthusiastic individuals of Vietnam and the advances in all different forms of technology the Vietnamese have formed a “special blend of nostalgia that appeals not only to the members of the diasporic communities but also to the residents of Vietnam, ultimately evolving Viet Kieu over time.

Chapter5 : Due to colonization, Languages have affected one anthers meaning and created new words and meanings for exsiting words. It has lead to a sense of privledge in some cases due to education and has influenced popular music by being able to have double meanings and be interchangeable in language.

Kato:

Hollywood has a desire for  the kine-aesthetic and performative narrative in the forms of Samurai and Kung Fu films, which is the art born of reclaimation of culture from post-colonialism.

FUSION CUISINE!!

More thoughts on different chapters from Dave. “If fusion is heralded as the democratic melding of cuisines, it is largely because it is a type of culinary multiculturalism that seems to challenge the rigidity of national boundaries and fixity.” In Ashland, MA there is a restaurant based around the idea of fusion cuisine. On the website this is the entry of the restaurant and its basis for meals. “Welcome to Fusion Cuisine located in Ashland, MA. This stylish and modern restaurant blends a variety of different Asian cuisines into an extensive and delectable menu featuring Chinese, Thai, and Japanese tastes. Red, plush suede booths, private tatami rooms, an eye-catching marble top bar and an array of plasma televisions are just a few glimpses into this contemporary and relaxing dining experience. Large groups and private parties are easily accommodated in our spacious rooms by our knowledgeable and friendly staff. Come explore a feast for your senses as we prepare unforgettable Asian inspired tastes and drinks in a setting meant to inspire a most memorable experience.”( http://www.fusion-cuisine.com/d ) I’d absolutely love to visit a restaurant like this, they attack all your senses and let you experience the ‘asian’ culture and I believe that it would be fun to go somewhere like this, but I also feel that its not a true experience as its all combined together when all the cultures have different traditions. I’m sure the food has also been somewhat ‘americanized’ but thats sort of the idea of food fusion cuisine, right? “Fusion cuisine, defines it as “a harmonious combination of foods of various origins.” “The burgeoning popularity of fusion cuisine in  urban metropolises can be understood as part of the trend toward high income gentrification within certain sectors of the urban landscape in global cities such as New York, London and Tokyo.” Basically my thoughts on this chapter and the idea of Fusion makes me want to learn more and experience it, but it also confuses me as I don’t understand if they want people to get the ‘asian experience’ as its referred to on the restaurant description but I sort of hate the idea of it being called that as all cultures had traditional ways they go about things, cook things etc and truly experiencing those would be completely different, but than again thats the idea of this, not sure why I can’t wrap my head around the thought truly.

Part 1 Chapter 1

I’ve started looking up some texts that have to do with gender and race in video games and I’m gonna start reading them and writing my preconceptions of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Z.O.T.) in light of the texts. If people know of anything please pass it along!

First up this week is an article coming from Cracked.com, 5 Prejudices That Video Games Can’t Seem to Get Over by J.F.  Sargent.  The five categories talked about are: “Racism as a Gameplay Mechanic; Relationship Mini-Games Create Exclusively Unhealthy Relationships; Strong Female Characters (Are More Satisfying to Demean); There Are No Gay Men, Just Lesbians (And Those Chicks Can Be Converted); The Fundamentals of Game Design Make Racism Easier”. Except for the, “There Are No Gay Men, Just Lesbians (And Those Chicks Can Be Converted)” and somewhat the “Relationship Mini-Games Create Exclusively Unhealthy Relationships” part of this list, I feel that the prejudices are very relevant to Z.O.T.

“Racism as a Gameplay Mechanic”:

In this section Sargent talks about how depending on characters race/humanoid species they have certain characteristics that are solely because they come from that race. Sargent also points out that most of the races are based off of real races and use real stereotypes for portrayals. Sargent just so happened to mention the Gerudo race in Zelda as one of the examples. Sargent states that they are based off of Gypsies, and I would say have some Indian undertones as well and are referred to as a the “thieving Gerudo race.” It’s also pointed out that Ganondorf (for those of you unfamiliar to the game he is the protagonist), who is the only male of that race (I’ll get into the male part later), is a non-white character and is very power hungry. Looking further though the other races in the game from Gorons, and Zoras to Kokiri and Sheikan all of them have certain characteristics that end up affecting Link (who is the Hero).

“Relationship Mini-Games Create Exclusively Unhealthy Relationships”:

Sergent uses this space to talk about how female characters are used in romantic ways in video games for the hero’s gain, and how in some games these relationships are based off of what character you chose to play. However in Zelda it’s pretty simple, while there is only one obvious “romantic” relationship, all of Link’s interactions with females in up with him gaining something from them. Starting with his friend Saria, she gives him an ocarina, and ends up being one of the seven sages who’s power helps him bet Ganondorf. Till the last female character Link encounters, Nabooru, who sorta ends up forfeiting the Silver Gauntlets and also ends up being one of the seven Sages.

“Strong Female Characters (Are More Satisfying to Demean)”:

Gerudo Guard

Gerudo Guard

Basically the more independent and stronger a female character is, the less clothes she is wearing or the more sexed up she is. While there are a lot of female characters in Z.O.T. the most independent one is Impa who is Princess Zelda’s bodyguard and then there is the clothing for the women of the Gerudo race. While Impa’s outfit is nothing compared to the Gerudo’s, compared to other females that war dresses, she is in a skin tight short body suit that accent her boobs.

Impa

Impa

As a race the Gerudo only have a male born every hundred years and besides that they are all women which makes them pretty independent from men and because they are thieves they need to guard their treasures. They wear low cut pants and basically bras.

“The Fundamentals of Game Design Make Racism Easier”:

This basically talks about how the bad people in video games are usually people of color and that you need to kill them in the game. It’s pretty obvious from the other implications with the Ganondorf, but in case you’ve missed it he’s non-white and evil and you need to kill him in the game to win.

Everything but the Burden: The Wedding Banquet

Themes

  • Power of deceit and secrecy
  • Tradition
  • Older generation placing the burden on the younger generation

Reaction: tumblr_mxk51uXV7J1rijqhzo2_400

That was mostly for the characters, not so much the plot. Each of them, so caught up in their own problems, they fail to realize everyone else’s, but still find a way to further their own goals. So selfish, yet it all worked out in the end.

What started out as a vicious cycle of lies and deceit still ended as such, but in a way where everyone was content. The mother, so set in her mindset believed that Wei Tung’s choice in sexuality was some form of psychological trauma/stigma. The father, just wanting a grandchild, was ok with his son’s choices but was not willing to tell anyone lest they change their minds.  Wei Wei wanted to stay in America, and was willing to lie to do so. Though she did feel remorse later on, she did in fact stay. Simon played a low key role throughout most of the movie, and only spoke when it was utterly necessary to move the plot along. Wei Tung, a grown man trying to please everyone in his life realizes that he is setting himself up for failure in trying to do so.

I found interesting article while I was looking for news connecting between Asia and USA. It may be not cultural connection between them, but I thought this is important to think about political relationship between Japan and USA. There is an article below from CNN.(http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/15/world/asia/navy-japan-carriers/)

Ronald Reagan will replace George Washington in Japan — or specifically the naval namesakes of the 40th and first presidents.

The U.S. Navy announced Tuesday that the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan will be replacing the USS George Washington at Yokosuka Naval Base near Tokyo. When the move takes place — the specific timelines are yet to be announced — the Washington will head to Virginia for overhaul and refueling, and the Reagan will leave its current home port in San Diego.

“The security environment in the Indo-Asia-Pacific requires that the U.S. Navy station the most capable ships forward. This posture allows the most rapid response times possible for maritime and joint forces, and brings our most capable ships with the greatest amount of striking power and operational capability to bear in the timeliest manner,” the Navy said in a news release announcing the move.

The Reagan has a history in Japan, having participated in relief efforts after the March 2011 tsunami that damaged the Fukushima nuclear plant. In December 2012, a group of eight sailors from the Reagan sued the Tokyo Electric Power Company, alleging that exposure to radiation that escaped from the plant sickened them.

In 2008, the Washington became the first American nuclear-powered carrier to be based in Japan when it replaced the USS Kitty Hawk. The Reagan is also nuclear-powered.

Although Japan has “the three nonnuclear principles”, in fact, the Nimitz class of aircraft carriers is located in Japan. USA says that it is for the security environment in the Indo-Asia-Pacific. However, USA also wants to emphasize its presence on the pacific Ocean. In my opinion, because Japan has tragic histories by nuclear weapons in the past such as an atomic bomb and radioactive contamination by Tsunami, having nuclear needs to be thought more carefully and strictly.

W6: Kato’s reading (p.71-112)

Actually, I did not know Jimi Hendrix before this reading. But, I was impressed by the reading and watching his live movies at Wood Stock. Here is the movie at Wood Stock “Star Spangled Banner” below.

Click here to view the embedded video.

His performance captured the sound of bombs falling overseas and screaming protestors. It has quite strong influence against the war on Vietnam all over the world as people still share this performance and influence.

“Like Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech against the war on Vietnam, Hendrix’s own reference point in ‘The Star-Spangled Banner,’ according to Monice Dannemann, was not only the Vietnam War also ‘the daily was which was being fought on the streets of the USA.’ “

Around the time when Jimi acted at Wood Stock, there were a lot of new diversity such as labor, environment, feminist, gay and lesbian movements etc.. caused by globalization. Thus, Jimi prayed and touched for world  peace with his music impact. Because his mixed ancestry included African American, Irish, and Cherokee ancestors, he was a part of diversity too. As we can see on the movie above, he presented Native American’s identity.

MUSIC has strikingly power and importance. Music helps tell histories and reflect the society and culture in which they were produced although time has passed a lot. Also, Music help unify  groups of people and to move them to common action or help them express common emotions. People sometimes use music to express their suppressed feelings.

W6: “Shaolin Ulysses” and “The black kungfu experience”

black-kungfu-experience._SL1500_

I enjoyed watching two films. I was surprised that Kung fu is practiced by such a lot of people in the USA. I’m so interested in Buddhism and Zen that I noticed similarities with them. I really like the way of Chinese martial arts; of course, technic and method are very important, but concentration of mind and  is  also really important like Buddhism. Those all are a way of life. Additionally, Chinese martial arts includes the self-expression as Hip Hop music.

It was interesting to see the differences among monks interviewed. Some give attention to spiritual part, on the other hand, Shi Xing Hong who went to Las Vegas sees a perfect opportunity to spread Zen and Kung fu in the USA.

There were different situations among Chinese and Black communities in 1960′s and 1970′s. However, both dealt with difficult political and prejudiced situations in the USA and China. Then, a precept of Kung Fu matched with Black community to express them selves. I really like the scene where the guy in the film mentions that people can use their own advantage for Kung fu. In the other word, Kung Fu is based on their individual merits. Skin color or a build does not matter. Everyone does different type of Kung Fu as the original five animal styles; Tiger, Leopard, Crane, Snake, and Dragon.

P.S. I just remembered this film “Kung Fu Panda”

W6: Tuesday’s “Pop-ositions”

I select from the article by Maira. My group came up with “pop-osition” for it; “Goa trance is inspired by ignorant appropriation of Indian culture by hippie-tourists.”

“….. South Asian motifs and music became particularly visible in the latest manifestation of ‘Asian cool’ at a time when South Asian immigration to the United States was growing rapidly…..”(Dave, 13)

It reminds me of Katy perry’s performance with Kimono. Some said she was racist because she was wearing Kimono improperly and mixed with Chinese dress. Some said she loves Japan, so she did not mean to be rude but expressed it as beauty that she thought. I also take popular culture in from other countries, culture, and religion such as s cross motif. New Asian styles are going ahead without understanding of original ones by foreigners or outsiders. I think that people should know prime culture if they want to use others.

To sum up, globalization created popular culture, however pop-culture is not always necessarily same as original meanings. Globalization created new culture.
