The topic for your first paper, a personal essay:
Describe a time when you needed to translate, whether for yourself or others, and you met with difficulty. Analyze the translation problem assigning it one or more categories using your understanding of linguistic terms thus far (e.g. phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse). This problem you faced can concern a natural language, an artificial language, or a programming language.
Paper Structure: After a brief description of the situation and problem, provide a brief linguistic analysis, then write a personal reflection on the questions and issues this situation raised for you. Think about the context, your own relationship to the languages, and the reaction of those present (if any).
