The Hound of the Baskervilles is a crime novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, originally serialised in the Strand Magazine in 1901 and 1902, which is set largely on Dartmoor in 1889. At the time of researching the novel, Conan Doyle was a General Practitioner in Plymouth, and thus was able to explore the moor and accurately capture its mood and feel. In the novel, the detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson are called to investigate a curse which is alleged to be on the house of the Baskervilles.

[edit] Copyright

Copyright is a limited monopoly granted to the author of a work. It gives the author the exclusive right, among other things, to make copies of the work, hence the name. Copyrights are issued for limited periods. When that period is up, the book enters the public domain. The public domain is the set of cultural works that are free of copyright, and belong to everyone equally. The copyright on any book published on or before today's date in 1923 has expired, and the book is in the public domain. This copyright rule also covers newspapers and magazines.

The Hound of the Baskervilles was published monthly by chapter in a magazine starting in 1901, and ending in 1902. Therefore, the copyright has expired (In fact, the copyright expired several decades ago). Many Evergreen students are unaware that copyrights expire after a certain date, and never think to look and see if their assigned books are available free online. With this knowledge, you should be able to save yourself a little money in the future.
