[edit] Exact Spelling Matters

  • When assigning categories, or linking internal pages, exact spelling, capitalization, and spacing matter.

Why?

  • Because once category and internal link/page names are inside those brackets, they function as wiki syntax
    • The slightest variation in name text will create a new but similarly named category or page - and confusion

[edit] Naming Your Pages

  • Give your research topic a short name
  • Use that name to start every page you make

For example

  • My topic is Disaster Relief - capital D, capital R
  • I use that to name pages for my research products and formal articles
    • Disaster Relief Annotated Sources
    • Disaster Relief Organizations Online
    • Disaster Relief Contributor - for my professional resume
    • Disaster Relief In History And On The Web - or whatever, for the main article

[edit] Managing Your Pages

  • Mark every page you make with Category: Your Short Topic Name
    • This will enable you to find them all and keep track of them
  • Look for and add existing categories that pertain to your pages
  • Think about how you spell and capitalize any new page or category as you make it
  • Take care when you link to an existing page or category
    • If the link turns up red, back up and correct the spelling
    • If you are not sure, check

[edit] Best Practices

  • Use your user page to create all your new links
    • Also use it for a reference list of frequently used existing categories and page names
    • Add a link on it to your own category page
  • Check if you are unsure of the exact "syntax" of existing page or category names
    • Navigate to Special Pages, then All Pages to check page names
    • Navigate to Special pages, then Categories to check category names
