of Home (pp. 213 298); Intimate Nature (pp. 244
312). Prepare a 1 2 page typed response paper for seminar. Begin
your research paper by talking to friends about what broad categories
interest you (rainforest people, shamanism, music and ecology,
wood carving, storytelling). Then think about selecting a more
specific topic and begin cruising the Library for sources: books,
articles, recordings, internet information, whatever. It is useful
to be broad-based at first because you may have difficulty finding
sources.

in earnest. Keep track of what you read by taking notes (and dont
forget to note the author, date, and page number for each reference).

Assignment for next week: Healing Sounds of
the Malaysian Rainforest. Prepare a 1 2 page typed response
paper for seminar. Attend the public performance by renowned Turkish
musician Latif Bolat on Friday the 23rd at 8 pm in
the Recital Hall of the Com Building. On Saturday morning, Mr.
Bolat will give a free public workshop between 10 and 12 in the
Experimental Theater of the Com Building. Continue exploring sources
for your research paper; continue taking notes. More than anything
else, start forming some kind of theoretical premise for your
work: are you focusing on colonialism? Gender? Spirituality? Modernization?
Fine-tune your note-taking to correspond with your theoretical
focus.

it in on Thursday.
