Field Trips
During the Winter Quarter, everyone in the
program went on two field trips. One of the trips was to Seattle
where we visited the Henry Art Gallery on the U of W campus, the
Seattle Arts Museum, and the galleries along Pioneer Square. The
other field trip was to Portland to see the art galleries down
there. The class also went to the leather factory in Portland
to buy leather pieces for the tops of our hand drums. The field
trips have been a great way for the students to experience art
and music in art galleries and museums. Also, for the students
to gain ideas in creating their own art or music.
The program Winter Quarter also went to see
the Olympia Symphony at the Washington Center downtown Olympia.
Sean and Joe wanted us to have a chance to see a live musical
performance before the end of the quarter. Also, the program was
able to get free tickets, so all the students didn't have to pay
the student rate.

Native Artists Symposium
This year several students in the Envisioning
Home program helped out or attended the Symposium workshops. Julia
(on the left) and Gabby (on the right) were among several that
volunteered at the Symposium. The other two in the picture were
Joe Fedderson and Rick Bartow, who is a well known Native American
artist from the Yerak tribe in Northern California. Rick has come
to speak to the class twice, about his art and music. The Longhouse
puts on the Native Artists Symposium every year where well known
artists come together to put on art workshops. The symposium is
a great way to meet people and well-known Native artists, and
learn from their experiences.
