Atoms,
Molecules and Research (AMR) 2003/04
A
Learning Community in Upper Division Chemistry
Atoms, Molecules and Research is a senior level
chemistry program designed to help the serious chemistry student understand
"what chemists do". In this program
we will cover the physical (thermodynamics, kinetics, quantum mechanics
& spectroscopy) and inorganic chemistry (main group and transition
elements) portions of the chemistry curriculum. In the fall quarter, in
the laboratory we will explore the analytical instrumentation available
at the college. In particular we will focus on the diode array UV/visible
spectrometer, the Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and the
nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer. This will be followed by
an independent research project in the winter and spring quarters. In
May 2004, students will present the results of their research at the Undergraduate
Research Conference of the Puget Sound Section of the American Chemical
Society (ACS). All 48 credits (16 per quarter) in
AMR are upper division science credits.
