Each student will work in the studio with their seminar groups. The two groups will alternate attending printmaking instructionals on Tuesday afternoon, every other week. Each individual student is expected to practice and experiment with media EVERY week, using open studio times, especially on friday, to develop projects and apply what they learn during instructionals. |

Our work in the print studio is guided by a few assumptions about art and imagination. Assumption 1: art (making and appreciation) is a way of deepening one's understanding of the world. Assumption 2: art-making is a way of enhancing and complicating one's thoughts and beliefs Assumption 3: art demands as much perspiration as inspiration. Assumption 4: art is not the product of genius, nor does it work without rigor, critical thinking, and analysis Assumption 5: art is infinite play Assumption 6: the imagination is central to the functioning of the mind Assumption 7: artistic expression can be personal and political at the same time Assumption 8: an artist is not a special kind of person; every person is a special kind of artist
Our work in the studio will go in two broad phases: FALL quarter will be spent learning and experimenting with techniques through free practice and conceptual challenges.
Monoprinting & monotype techniques, drypoint, Relief printing techniques, including linoleum carving, (possibly) photopolymer printing, and letterpress printing. Basic bookbinding skills will be taught as a way to incorporate visual work with creative essay writing.
WINTER quarter will be spent executing a project [conceived (at least in large part) by the end of Fall quarter.] The broad goal of the project is to create work that explores and communicates your response to a key concept or question of the course. Visual work will be integrated with or related to your final writing project. Projects will be: DRAFTS will be critiqued Initial work will be presented for critique Final work will be exhibited as art and as seminar "texts"
