Political Economy and Social Change: From Colonization to Globalization Writing Assignments
In the fall there will be three types of program writing:
There will be two five-to-six page essays of analysis and synthesis (due Tuesday l November and Friday 18 November) that will enable you to bring clarity to and develop your own interpretative analysis of major themes introduced through the program content. Each essay should state, develop, and support a thesis or well-formed argument. Evidence should be drawn from the program books, articles, films, and lectures. The essay questions and more detailed guidelines will be handed out at least a week prior to the due dates.
Students will begin preliminary work on collaborative research projects to be completed in the winter quarter. The choice of research topic is to be developed through program discussion and in consultation with the faculty. Several sessions will be devoted to the collective sharing of research in progress and to the critiques, support, and analysis of one another’s work, including conceptual frameworks and the articulation between theoretical development and historical evidence. In addition, students will work in small critique clusters to read and comment on one another’s research. The Preliminary Statement is due Friday 21 October and the Research Prospectus is due Friday 2 December.
The Program Journal is the place to keep your questions, ideas, and critiques of each week’s material (readings, films, and lectures) as well as your preliminary research ideas. Use your journal weekly (three to five pages per week) to work through your understanding of the material, record your reasoned agreements and disagreements with authors and lines of argument, and pursue your own insights and developing analysis. Your Journal is to be turned in to your seminar leader twice during the quarter, at the end of week III and again on Wednesday of week X. The journal entries are to be typed. |
