Today I was able to find a class to help with my community service project. The class is a fourth and fifth grade Hi cap class. Mrs. Pegg, the teacher, agreed to accommodate my request and was happy to do it. It was a challenge to find a class because I already work in a classroom, I did not want my community service to interfere with my working hours. I get off of work half hour before the students, so I asked the principal if I can do my community service project during this time; I also asked the principal if I can do a garden where a tree was planted in memory of a student who died in a car accident last year. The area where the tree is planted is about 49' x 44' and needs a little care and love. The elementary students and I will beautify the area with agarden and learn together has a class and small groups with the supervision of Mrs. Pegg.

Today was my first day with Mrs. Pegg's class, a mix of 4th and 5th graders. This is a hicap class. They were very excited to do this project, especially because of the student that died last year, that they all knew very well. The tree has been planted in memory of him and the garden will be a great addition.

Today the class and I went outside to the playground. Where the garden area will be. We measured the area and the students shared some ideas. We started brainstorming. Some students gave some great ideas like, a path to walk towards the tree, to build a bench, and to do stepping stones.

Mrs. Pegg was absent today however I was able to work with the students with the supervision of the substitute teacher. Today the students wrote the ideas for the landscape of the garden and we talk about them. At the end I give the students the assignment to draw a sketch of future garden. They work and groups some students asked me if they can do their own for home work.

Today I had the opportunity to observe the class. This is a well behave class with more girls than boys. I can tell that the students are very happy to learn and serve in the garden project; I think that is exciting for them to be able to design, plant, build, and work together to create a garden, no to many students in public school have the opportunity to work and learn with nature.

I was excited to see the landscape sketches of the garden that the students turned in today. I put the eight sketches on the floor and the students came and looked at them then we discussed the attributes of each of them. We decided to vote for the three top ones, although we can consider parts of all the sketches for the final one. This exercise helped the students to judge and choose for what they thought was the right sketch for the garden. Even though they knew they were going to use a little of each map. I offered to put the three top ones together and use some ideas of the other ones and bring it on Monday and see if that is something they would like.

I got my ruler and pencil out and tried to combine the three top sketches also with the input of the other ones, so I could put a nice ariel landscape map together. The students have done a good job, considering the area with plants and flowers, a pathway for the tree, stepping stones for around the trees and flowerbeds. Also a bench to sit and contimplate the tree.

I presented the sketch to the students and they were very happy what had come together of their contributions and they agreed to proceed.Today also we talked about plants and to start thinking what kinds of plants are proper for this area. A lot of students already in mind what they wanted to use. I gave them the assignment to ask their parents for ideas and research what would be good for this garden.

The students turned their list and information about plants and we talked about them. Then today was the first day that they were able to work in groups. I took them outside to remove some cement blocks that were in the garden, so that they could be moved aside so that the students could start pulling weeds. They were very happy because they saw worms under the blocks and eggs of some type of insect. I think they were ant eggs. They loved to get their hands dirty.

Today I was able to work in my web site. I took time to reflect on what the quarter has been. I know that I have been more familiar with the program Dreamwever, HTML coding and CSS. It is nice to learn about different ways to a web site.

I decided to do a lesson sperate from my community service. so today I did a lesson on orange pumpkins. The lesson included useful ways to use pumpkins. We talked about the fairy tale of the Jack-O-Lanterns and the history of pumpkins. The question for the students to answer was, "What can you do with a pumpkin?", then the other half of the class was Roasting pumpkin seeds. For more details refer to curriculum web page.

My lesson went great today. I set up everything when the kids were at recess. I brought like 10 pumpkins and set them up on newspapers, I also brought a microwave to the class. Along with spoons, strainers and salt. This class was about an hour long. First I showed the biggest pumpkin to the class and everyone got excited. We talked about how the pumpkin was a fruit. Also how the name "Jack-O-Lantern" was made up. We also talked about how pumpkins are true natives of North America. They were one of the first foods grown by the natives. Pumpkins kept early people alive and healthy. I gave the students a worksheet to write and draw about what they liked to do with a pumpkin. They shared some ideas with the other students in the class. They worked in groups to extract seeds from the pumpkins, but i cut the tops so they wouldn't have to use knives. Most of the kids used their hands to scoop the seeds into the strainer. Then they washed the seeds in the sink, then we put them in a plate in the microwave for about 6 or 7 minutes. If they weren't cooked we put them in for a little longer and we added salt. After they were cooked, we ate them.
