Arts, Environment and the Child: Walking the Wheel of the Seasons

Curriculum Work

Since most of the days have started with a game, I think it would be fun to "make a rainstorm" with body movements. The group would sit in a circle and would be instructed that they are each going to be making the same movements at different times, and their actions together as a group will sound like a rain storm! Whenever I come directly in front of them with a movement, they individually repeat it and continue to make that motion/noise until I come around the circle again with a new movement.

Movements/noises that fade into each other:

1. Blowing noise (sounds like wind)

2. Rubbing hands together (sounds like gusts of wind)

3. Snapping and/or hitting fingers against palm (sounds like raindrops)

4. Clapping the hands against the thighs (sounds like rain)

5. Clapping the hands against the thighs while tapping and stomping the feet against the floor (sounds like heavy rain and thunder)

6. In unison we clap (lighting) while continuing to be loud rain and thunder.

7. Continue the pattern backwards, simulating a passing thunderstorm.
