Ownership: My property. I own one acre on Arcadia Pt. in Mason County . Description: Size: The site is rectangular. The length is 20’ which runs North and South and the width is 12’. The garden is in an open area and gets about 9 hours of direct sunlight per day. The area is flat and there is a small slope, maybe 10%. The soil characteristics are a loose loam, dark brown in color. For the past several months I have been mulching in all of the vegetable matter from my juicer. Since I started doing this I have noticed that the big, night crawler type of worms, is taking up residence. The soil seems to drain quite well. The plants that are present now, are Lavender and Catnip. The Lavender plants I transplanted from the Peterson garden. They look a little scraggly but Marilee said they should make it. My Nepeta Cataria plant is showing the signs of having gone through a cold winter, but it should come back just fine. As you can see from the photo I have a deer problem… that is an understatement…a huge deer problem. One reason the deer hang out at my place is that I am one of the few homes in this area without a dog.
I have come home after dark to see a family reunion of about 8 or 9 deer in my yard devouring everything in their path. Every year since I have lived here there is a doe that has twin fawns. So in the spring I get to watch the spotted twins jumping and running all over the yard, they play just like children. They tease each other, nip and chase, back and forth. It makes it all worth it for me. If anybody knows about deer proof plants or a trick to keep them away from my Laurel hedge, I would love to hear it. They have “Bonsai-ed” every plant I have. The reason I chose this place is because it is very close to my house and it is in an open sunny area. I have a lot of fir and cedar trees on the property and they create an acidic soil around them. Also the other areas were too shady. I created this garden about three years ago as a plant refuge. I have used it to start leaf trees and some of my hedge plants. Having a place that is fenced is a necessity. I had the top soil brought in and have been working at quality improvement as it was not very good. The first year garden was a flop but is getting better every year. GRUB is going to bring in some soil in April and help me to build raised beds. I am really excited about getting the help from them. My hopes are for an abundant vegetable garden this year. |
