1-09-06 | My home | A couple of days before class I decided to try and put together a web page on the Microsoft Frontpage program. It was a little tricky to transfer over to Dreamweaver, but Beth helped me and I think it turned out pretty good. |
1-11-06 | A.E.C. after class meeting | This was my first meeting at class for the Lunar New Year event.Promotion was the topic with posters and radio spots |
1-19-06 | Shelton | I met with one of the program directors for an after school program called S.O.C.K. Save Our County Kids. We talked about what they do at sock and what kind of help might be needed. |
1-20-06 | Downtown Olympia | I met with Hannah and Melanie and we put up Lunar New Year posters and tried to convince shop owners why they should donate to the program. It was a rainy cold morning and I was preoccupied with life stuff when Melanie got me out of my "mood" and I was able to remember to just enjoy the moment...which I did! |
1-25-06 | A.E.C. after class meeting | Lunar New Year meeting. Talked about going to Seattle to put info on P.M. Northwest Television program. |
1-29-06 | Skok Res. | I had a meeting with Marilee. I missed the work party and didn't get out to Marilees until 2:00, but she invited me in and she said that we needed to have a planning meeting. So we had a wonderful visit for 2 hours and talked about her plans for the garden, what I wanted to learn from the work and then we caught up on each others lives and how we made it through the holidays. It's always such a pleasure to visit with her. |
2-1-06 | TESC computer lab | Worked on Lunar New Year parking lot posters. |
2-1-06 | TESC computer lab | Did research for lesson plan for SOCK |
2-2-06 | My home | I spent some time on the phone trying to locate A-boards to display the posters. Basically I cut out giant arrows and taped them to the LNY poster. Then I purchased sheet protectors and cut them open and taped them together, put the posters inside so the posters would be water proof. |
2-3-06 | TESC | LNY I met with Stephanie and we put up A-boards in the turn-a-bout and the parking lot, attached posters for directions to the LNY. Then we strategically placed the rest of the posters around the campus. |
2-4-06 | TESC | Longhouse clean up and took down A-boards and posters. |
2-6-06 | SOCK | Spent time getting to know some of the kids. |
2-10-06 | SOCK | Observations with the kids. There seems to always be new kids show up, and they are all at different age levels. It may be a challenge to come up with a lesson for such a general age group. I did observe several aggressive outbursts through the afternoon, which was quickly under control from the guidance of a full time counselor. I was impressed with his style and control of the kids. He knew when to let them cool off and when to confront them. It seems to be a pretty good bunch of kids though. |
2-11-06 | Peterson Garden | Peterson Garden. I met with Rebecca L. and Caitlin at the Petersons and we started out with some tea. I had to bring the baby so he sort of stole all of the attention at first. Marilee was more than happy to “baby sit” while we worked in the garden. Her husband Pete even took a turn at holding the baby. The three of us went out and did some basic clean up of twigs from the storm. We had a huge pile, so I started a fire and we burned up branches pinecones and a ton of sticks. It was really a beautiful day and it was so nice to work out in the crisp cool morning and to have the sounds of a fire, with the popping and crackles that fires do…and the smell of the smoke. It really brought back some childhood memories for me of helping my dad clean up the yard after a storm. We did a lot of miscellaneous tasks. We moved some dirt around, filled in low spots and leveled down high spots. Planted some bulbs and pruned a ground cover plant that I can’t remember the name of, and we prepared the spot where we will be pouring cement. Then Marilee called us in for lunch. She prepared Lasagna and she always makes a vegetarian dish for me, which was eggplant parmesan! It was so good just like everything always is that she makes. This was one of the deciding factors why I chose to work at the Petersons again this quarter ( but mostly because Pete and Marilee are so full of wisdom and are such wonderful people. After lunch I put the baby in a backpack and did a little more work. He instantly fell asleep. The fresh air is like a sedative to him. Praise God. |
2-13-06 | TESC | I just put in four hours wrestling with Dream Weaver...I think I won :) |
2-26-06 | Skok Reservation | I was invited to the Skokomish Longhouse for a memorial celebration by Merilee Peterson. Wow! What an experience. There was drumming, singing and tribal members in full traditional dress. The ceremonies were what Merilee called "secret work" and she felt that the tribe should not have had the public to view some of the things that we saw. It was a day I will never forget. I think it was the tribe comming together to morn a very important person. Also people from other tribes were there and participating in a initiation ceremony. Then groups of people were invited to eat in another tent. There was Alder cooked salmon and soup and pies and crab and lots of wonderful food. This was a day I will always remember. |
3-03-06 | TESC | I arrived on campus at 8:30am and started my volunteer shift with Robin Worley and her Trasy Fashion show. I helped her to unload all of her stuff and then we set it up. I spent a couple of hours with her and then I went to my next job that I had signed up to volunteer at. It was a lecture by John Pullimo about sustainability. I didn't have too much to do for him but I did clean the chalk board and then I made sure the room was tidy for the next speaker. After that I went on a Wild food adventure, which was a nature walk on campus with a tour guide. His name is John Kallas. It was a fun walk but I must admit that I already knew most of the foods he pointed out like Huckleberries, Cattails and wild strawberries. Then I returned on Saturday and the most memorable lecture I attended was from a man named Michael Pilarsky from Friends of theTrees Society. The lecture was mostly on Permaculture. |
3-12-06 | My Home and Library | I spent several hour creating two presentations for my final. I have went to th elibrary for information on child development and information for my plant study. |
3-17-06 | My Home | I am not sure how to log my hours observing baby. I have spent many hours watching his every move. I have spent many hours while most people are sleeping, tending to the baby as he spent his first few months screaming with colic. This has been the hardest eight months I have experienced in many years, but also the most rewarding. He brings so much joy and life to my home. |
