Equal Protection Clause

Brown v. Board of Education (1954)

Details:

Black students denied admission to public schools because of de jure segregation sought to challenge the doctrine of separate-but-equal schools. The plaintiffs contended that separate was not and could not be equal. Using the testimony of social scientists to show the effects of segregation on black children's self-image, the plaintiffs successfully argued that de jure segregation violated the Equal Protection Clause.
