[edit] Prison Activism and Resistance Outline

[edit] Opening

Start with an injustice documented on internet and an achievement employed by internet activism. Make sure it shows prisoner as a person and web activism as a success. Perhaps look more closely at prison support sites as well as personal petitions like Sean’s. Possibly talk about the 21st century tea party (or hold out for later in the paper).

Thesis: - The internet helps organizers connect and discover new allies as well as share information and encourage through the sharing of successes. Web technologies have heightened community awareness regarding the incarceration system, connnects, and offers support.

[edit] Describe Goals of Prison Abolition and Brief on Grievances

The use of internet to supplement these goals:

Education- what basic information are they enlightening people about? Is this an effective means of supplying information? Is the content organized? Functional?

Advocacy- Do the websites/organizations successfully advocate prison abolition? Do they ask for volunteers? Make the effort appear effortless? Encourage support and action, offer incite on action and up to date information on what is going on? Do they appear to be open to outside individuals?

Communication- What types of communication are being encouraged, is full used of IT communication technologies being employed by prison activist groups? What kind of people are engaging in conversations? What is the dialogue typically about? Is there dialogue between organizations?

[edit] Relationship Between Convict and Society: The Community Healing Process

-What advantages does the inclusion of community within the prison industry produce? Healing the prisoner, enlightening society and the individual. Is this communication celebrated and encouraged online by activist groups? -Do web organizations and activists offer a way for the individual, activist, community to get in contact and involved with prisoners?

-Are prisoners and the ‘free people’ communicating directly online?

[edit] The Relationship that Exists Online

-Between organizers, activists, community members, prisoners and government officials. -Consider term, ‘you are what you link’

-Possibly also look at the internet/medias depiction of the criminal as the ‘enemy’ and their relationship with prison groups online- as well as activists attempts to dilute the image through web activism online.

[edit] What is Being Done on Web (Abolition Efforts)? Is this Effective? [conclusion]

-Are in-the-flesh efforts and communication more effective? Is community awareness (as) possible without use of internet. Unknown/recognized/talked about. -Consider the idea of communication and relationships, especially between the community, activists and prisoners- prisoners do not have use of the internet medium to follow activism and take part, is this detrimental to the group efforts or only a small factor? -Where do I believe it can and should go from here?

[edit] Provisional Paragraph

I plan to address communicative relationships online, between activist, organizers, community and prisoners. I’d like to look at internet communication and it’s ability to enhance real-life dialogue as well as well as what it means to be a community on the web. How effective is this community for national efforts, is prison abolition recognized as effective only at a local/small community level? If this is the case, how is this represented on the internet? Do websites and networks/ links portray this feeling of centralized commitment or does it serve to seem privatized and cut outside individuals out? I plan on attempting to answer these questions and more in my research paper.
