The first blog as we know them today was created in 1999. The term "blogosphere" was coined in 2003 to refer to the growing online world of read-write activity that blogging has created. According to the online indexing service, Technorati, more than 110 million blogs currently exist online and 175,000 continue to be made every day.1

In 2005, the video blogging site Youtube made its debut online.2 Today Youtube hosts more than 75 million videos and has made content sharing partnerships with most of the television network in the MSM.

This article will discuss the arrival of the blog and other forms of social media, the emergence of the blogosphere as a social media phenonemon, the blogosphere's growing impact on the main stream media, and what futurists imagine for blogs in the future.
