1. Tatum, Beverly D. "Can We Talk About Race?. 1st ed. Boston, MA: Beacon Press, 2007. This book illustrates the ways in which education, specifically K-12 education, in the U.S. has failed to truly integrate in the post- Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision, which effectively de-segregated public schools. Tatum illustrated how subsequent court decisions and legislation has all but reversed the Brown decision. She also delineates her theory of how to teach in multi-cultural classrooms effectively and shows the ways in which this theory works in practice.

2. Wilchins, Riki Anne. "Read My Lips: Sexual Subversion and the End of Gender". 1st ed. New York, NY: Firebrand Books, 1997. This book is one of the landmark trans texts of our time. Wilchens is the cofounder of Transsexual Menace and was at the time the book was written the Executive Director of Gender PAC. This is at once an autobiography, a social science text, and a manifesto.

3. Feinberg, Leslie. "Trans Liberation: Beyond Pink and Blue". 1st ed. Boston, MA: Beacon Press, 1998. In this book, Leslie Feinberg gives a historical perspective of the current climate of transgender groups, and the transgender identity and politic. This book engages the concepts of gender as a fluid thing, and leads into an activist frame.

4. Bornstein, Kate. "Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women, and the Rest of Us". 1st ed. New York, NY: Vintage Books, 1995. This is an autobiographical political text that questions the gender binary through the telling of Bornstein’s story of transition.

5. Labonté, Richard, and Lawrence Schimel, eds. "First Person Queer: Who We Are (so far)". 1st ed. Vancouver, BC: Arsenal Press, 2007. This is a collection of short non-fiction accounts of living queer in the ultra-contemporary climate.

6. Bullough, Vern L., ed. "Before Stonewall: Activists for Gay and Lesbian Rights in Historical Context". 1st ed. Binghamton, NY: Harrington Park Press, 2002. This is an account of the movers and shakers of the Gay Liberation Movement, both pre- and post-stonewall.

7. Ekins, Richard, and Dave King. "The Transgender Phenomenon". 1st ed. London, England: Sage Publications, 2006. This book serves to study the aspects of transgender culture through the existing models of understanding.

8. McCaughey, Martha, and Michael D. Ayers, eds. "Cyberactivism: Online Activism in Theory and Practice". 1st ed. New York, NY: Routledge, 2003. This is a series of articles written on the impact of the Internet on activism.

It examines the scholarly literature of the past two decades on the subject, primarily focusing on the United States as the plural society, and using literature available in the English language.

2. Identity Construction: New Issues, New Directions Author(s): Karen A. Cerulo Source: Annual Review of Sociology, Vol. 23, (1997), pp. 385-409 Published by: Annual Reviews Stable URL: http://www.jstor.org/stable/2952557 This Journal article examines the shifts in the study of the formation of identity that have occured since the 1980's with the development of the study of virtual identity. This article explores the ways in which the addition of cyberspace has changed identity constriction.

4. Collective Identity and Social Movements Author(s): Francesca Polletta and James M. Jasper Source: Annual Review of Sociology, Vol. 27, (2001), pp. 283-305 Published by: Annual Reviews Stable URL: http://www.jstor.org/stable/2678623 This article looks at the idea of collective identity as sociologists use it. It examines how this concept has been used in social movements, and identity politics.

Coming out and Crossing over: Identity Formation and Proclamation in a Transgender Community Author(s): Patricia Gagne, Richard Tewksbury, Deanna McGaughey Source: Gender and Society, Vol. 11, No. 4, (Aug., 1997), pp. 478-508 Published by: Sage Publications, Inc. Stable URL: http://www.jstor.org/stable/190483 This article is the outcome of a study of Male-to-Female Trans people, done in the 1990s. It poses the opinion that by transitioning, transsexuals re-inscribe the gender binary. In other words, trans people may feel that their actions (transitions) are questioning the fundamental nature of the male/female gender and sex binary, but actually (in the opinion of the authors) they are merely re-enforcing it. This article has some merit as a source of how queer identity is formed.

Cyberspace and Identity Author(s): Sherry Turkle Source: Contemporary Sociology, Vol. 28, No. 6, (Nov., 1999), pp. 643-648 Published by: American Sociological Association Stable URL: http://www.jstor.org/stable/2655534 This article discusses exactly what the title sounds like it might, identity and cyberspace. It primarily focuses on the fact that cyberspace offers individuals the opportunity to create identities and essentially play as different parts of their personalities. It is an article of sociological study.

7. Individual Identities, Collective Identities, and Organizational Structure: The Relationship of the Political Left and Gay Liberation in the United States Author(s): Steve Valocci Source: Sociological Perspectives, Vol. 44, No. 4, (Winter, 2001), pp. 445-467 Published by: University of California Press Stable URL: http://www.jstor.org/stable/1389653 This article connects the Political Left, i.e. the raise of communism and socialism in the 1930s, and the Gay Liberation Movement. It is primarily focused from the 1930s to the 1970s.

Growing up Online Author(s): Bruce Bower Source: Science News, Vol. 169, No. 24, (Jun. 17, 2006), pp. 376-378 Published by: Society for Science & the Public Stable URL: http://www.jstor.org/stable/4019266 This article details research of sociologists about the use of the Internet by youth, and illustrates the content of Internet communications by people ages 12-17 mainly. It discusses the part of identity that young people today are forming online.

9.Transsexuals' Narrative Construction of the "True Self" Author(s): Douglas Mason-Schrock Source: Social Psychology Quarterly, Vol. 59, No. 3, Special Issue: Gender and Social Interaction, (Sep., 1996), pp. 176-192 Published by: American Sociological Association Stable URL: http://www.jstor.org/stable/2787018 This article examines the concept of the self-narrative as a process of coming terms with the nature of an individual's true identity. It uses pre-operative transsexuals as a case of study in terms of the power of a self-narrative to construct one's identity.

2. Rosenberg, Robert, John Scagliotti & Greta Schiller. "Before Stonewall". [DVD] First Run Features, 1985. This film is a documentary look at the social climate and movements that lead up to the Stonewall riots in 1969. It is a discussion of how a gay/lesbian identity formed in the United States.
