[edit] Exact Spelling Matters
- When assigning categories, or linking internal pages, exact spelling, capitalization, and spacing matter.
Why?
- Because once category and internal link/page names are inside those brackets, they function as wiki syntax
- The slightest variation in name text will create a new but similarly named category or page - and confusion
[edit] Naming Your Pages
- Give your research topic a short name
- Use that name to start every page you make
For example
- My topic is Disaster Relief - capital D, capital R
- I use that to name pages for my research products and formal articles
- Disaster Relief Annotated Sources
- Disaster Relief Organizations Online
- Disaster Relief Contributor - for my professional resume
- Disaster Relief In History And On The Web - or whatever, for the main article
[edit] Managing Your Pages
- Mark every page you make with Category: Your Short Topic Name
- This will enable you to find them all and keep track of them
- Look for and add existing categories that pertain to your pages
- Think about how you spell and capitalize any new page or category as you make it
- Take care when you link to an existing page or category
- If the link turns up red, back up and correct the spelling
- If you are not sure, check
[edit] Best Practices
- Use your user page to create all your new links
- Also use it for a reference list of frequently used existing categories and page names
- Add a link on it to your own category page
- Check if you are unsure of the exact "syntax" of existing page or category names
- Navigate to Special Pages, then All Pages to check page names
- Navigate to Special pages, then Categories to check category names
