  • Chapter 1 of the math text is about NCTM standards. Your first task in your working groups is to take a copy of the Math EALRs and a copy of Standard V of the state standards for teacher certification and compare it to what chapter one says. Note similarities and differences. (45 min) Report your findings back to the class. (15 min)
  • Chapter 2 of the math text is the beginning of our authors' explanation of their philosophy of mathematics education.
    • Read the material in chapter 2 up to the section called "An Invitation to Do Mathematics." Have a brief discussion of the main ideas in this reading. (20 min)
    • There are four suggested problems in the text starting on page 14. In your working groups A - D, work out the problem indicated below and be prepared to present the problem and solution to the whole class. It would be best not to assume any advanced knowledge of algebra or geometry. (30 min + 15 min to report back)
      • Group A - Start and Jump Numbers
      • Group B - Two Machines
      • Group C - One Up, One Down
      • Group D - The Best Chance of Purple
    • Now in the same groups try the problems starting on page 19
      • Group A - Four Consecutive numbers
      • Group B - Acrobats ..
      • Group C - Pizzas
      • Group D - Trapezoids
