Assignment Due Week 2:

  • Bring in collected images (pre-scanned/web content) that represent yourself to use in Photoshop collage

  • Compose a blog page that describes your initial portrait project ideas including:
    topic, background information, your interest in this topic, ideas for execution, stylistic approach etc.

  • If you have one, bring in your digital still camera to class for next week

Week 2
Self Portrait and the Visual Environment:

  • Design elements, bring in digitized images (pre-scanned, or from the web), use Photoshop to create an image collage and compress for the web to post on blog site

  • Principles of Design

  • Photoshop basics, image resolution, scanning, selections, layers, save for web

  • In class activity: create self-portrait collage
  • WordPress: Theme-ing, creating a banner and posting images,

Assignment Due Week 3:

  • Create a visual self portrait using a series of still images, or a single image utilizing Photoshop manipulations/collage techniques. Post completed work on blog.

  • Prepare to present your project proposal to your check-in group

Week 3
Field Recording:

  • Review portrait images from last week

  • Field recording, interview recording, Audacity multi-tracking

  • Record voice over in class of project description-artist statement assignment and post on blog

  • Wordpress: adding audio to your blog

Assignment Due Week 4:

  • * In class, record an interview about an element of your project for use in next week's podcasting workshop.
    * Outside of class collect a minimum of three images, and at least two audio recordings (interview, sound effects, music etc.) that you will use to create a podcast of your project proposal.

Week 4
Podcasting:

  • Creating audio and enhanced audio podcasts

  • In-Class Activity:
    Use interview content from previous week to create a simple podcast using Garage Band and post completed work on blog site

  • Intro to syndication and RSS: Publishing a podcast using WordPress and iTunes

  • Working with quick mask and alpha channel tools in Photoshop

Assignment Due Week 5:

  • Create a enhanced podcast in Garage Band using recorded material and still images

  • Post a comment on two other classmates' blog sites on their podcast from in-class

Week 5
Moving Image:

  • Video palmcorder proficiencies (for those who need it), warn students about non-tape formats - Amy will work with students who have their own cameras while Stephanie instructs the proficiency


  • Bring video footage to next class to learn how to edit in iMovie

Week 6 Video Post-Production:

  • Editing with iMovie, students that are working with their own cameras need to confirm their recordings are compatible

  • A not so far field trip: Evergreen Expressions Presentation of Famed Russian Animator: Yuri Norstein
Assignment due week 7: * Create a short video using your footage you captured from last week in iMovie and post completed work in Moodle (50MB size limit). Posting to your blog is optional (20 MB limit). Include at least:
o One title
o One transition

* Write a blog post at least a paragraph in length in response to the Yuri Norstein event including:
o The thematic and stylistic approaches that you saw in his work including mood, texture, pacing, character development, scenery etc.
o How did you receive these pieces? How do you think they represent Yuri as an artist and also respond to the cultural stories/events that are featured?
o How does his talk about being an artist and producing work translate (if at all) to your final project?
Week 7 Text:

  • Writing for the web

  • Working with typography and titles

  • Styling with CSS

Assignment due week 8: create a short animated work using text
Week 8 Remix:

  • Issues of ownership: copyright, copyleft and the Creative Commons
