Applying To This Program

This program will require an application for entrance demonstrating commitment to the goals of the program and capacity to collaborate and work in an interdisciplinary creative environment. The program is primarily for students who have completed Experimental Music, Intro to Electronic Music or MediaWorks during the fall and/or winter 2011-12. However, students with the following backgrounds are welcome to apply:

You would need to have one or both of the following:

1. Experimental Media – Extensive Film/Media Theory and knowledge of histories of experimental film and video art, experience in 16mm and/or HD video production, experience in non-linear digital editing, experience in lighting for film and video.

OR

2. Experimental/Electronic Music – Previous study of experimental and electronic music composition, theory, and history.
(Strongly suggested) Experience with MaxMSP or other programming environment.

Students who submit their applications by the March 2012 Academic Fair will be given priority.

Students entering the program who have taken MediaWorks, Experimental Music or Electronic Music in Fall/Winter 2011-12 must submit the following:

1) a cover page that includes full name (as it appears for registration), any alternative name used, A-Number, and projected class standing at the start of Spring 2012;

2) a brief (1 page) description of a potential independent project that you’d like to create during the 10 week quarter. These potential projects should demonstrate a commitment to pushing yourselves formally and conceptually in media, music or a combination of the forms. (Don’t worry, we aren’t going to hold you to making this specific project, we just want to see what you’re thinking about doing.)

Students who have not taken MediaWorks, Experimental Music or Electronic Music in 2011-12 should submit the following:

1) a cover page that includes full name (as it appears for registration), any alternative name used, A-Number, and projected class standing at the start of Spring 2012;

2) a brief (1 page) letter of introduction to the faculty describing how your academic and creative background demonstrates preparation for working in a demanding collaborative learning community focused on the exploration of experimental media and music. Our expectation is that all students coming into this program have completed the equivalent of 1-2 full time quarters in the history, theory and practice of experimental media and/or music. We also expect that students entering the program will be prepared to explore areas of experimental media and music that may be new and unfamiliar, and that they are willing to work collaboratively on projects that meld music and media. P

3) a brief (1 page) description of a potential independent project that you’d like to create during the 10 week quarter. These potential projects should demonstrate a commitment to pushing yourselves formally and conceptually in media, music or a combination of the forms. (Don’t worry, we aren’t going to hold you to making this specific project, we just want to see what you’re thinking about doing.)

4) a faculty evaluation from an interdisciplinary program;

5) a student evaluation from the same interdisciplinary program.

(If you are a transfer student who does not have faculty and student evaluations, please submit the letter of introduction, your transcripts and a letter of reference from a faculty member at your previous institution who can speak to your skills and preparation based upon the prerequisites).

Please submit well-organized, labeled, and thoughtfully written materials to Naima Lowe by the Spring 2012 Academic Fair. You may drop off your materials in Naima Lowe’s mailbox in Seminar 2 A-2117, or bring them to our table at the Academic Fair. Hard copies are greatly preferred, but if you are unable to bring your materials to campus, you may email them as a single .PDF file to lowen@evergreen.edu.  A list of accepted students will be posted at http://blogs.evergreen.edu/experimentalmediamusic2012 by the Monday after the Academic Fair.  If the program does not fill from this first pool of applicants, applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the program fills.
