Breathe

By Lynn Wenderoth

At my first breath, you held mom’s hand,
Kissed her cheek, tears fell softly to the ground.
You held me tight,
Promised never to let go.
As I grew you shared life’s lessons with me:
Be honest, humble and fair,
Respect your elders,
Always comb your hair.
You believed in me even when I didn’t,
Thank you for getting me through it.

As an adult you loved me still
Caring for my children,
Teaching them life’s lessons too:
Be honest, humble and fair
Respect your mother
Always comb your hair.
I thought you were invincible
Till the day I heard you say,
This cancer, Lynn, is taking me away.
I held your hand, kissed your cheek,
My tears fell softly to the ground.
