Overview of Genus Nebria, Latreille 1802

Identification:
No lateroventral processes on maxilla; setae inserted directly on ventral maxillary surface; prothorax very short, small with strongly arcuate sides, usually constricted at base, and often cordiform. Elytra with nine complete and one abbreviated scutellar stria; third interval always having two or more setigerous dorsal punctures.

Range:
Holarctic.

Natural History:
This genus is adapted to cold and represented in northern and mountain regions; fifty-five species found in North America. Many are strongly hygrophilous, but confined to stony, barren margins of running waters. These beetles are carnivorous and nocturnal.
