Pterostichus herculaneus, Mannerheim 1843

Identification:
A medium sized, species (13.5-17 mm) which can be recognized by the laterobasal carina of the prothorax. Prothorax flat and broad with broadly protruding front angles, and with small, well impressed outer basal fovea; frons with sharply delimited raised triangular area behind clypeus; body black to light black; outer portion of antennae and protarsi paler than body.

Range:
Found along west coastal North America from Oregon to British Columbia, and inland west of the Rockies.

Natural History:
Occurs in dense, dry conifer or mixed forests, mostly under logs. Hibernation may take place in larval stage. On TESC campus, found in mixed, broadleaf and conifer woods.
