Scaphinotus marginatus, Fischer 1822

Identification:
Medium sized, black with a faintly bluish or violaceous fore body and bright coppery to black elytra; elytral margins with bluish, greenish, violaceous or golden lustre; prothorax with prolongation of lateral basal foveae to before middle of the disc; elytral sculpture rougher than in S. angusticollis, with 14-16 deep punctured irregular striae. Males have protarsi with four moderately dilated segments.

Range:
Western North America from northern California to Aleutian Islands and Alaskan peninsula; east to western Montana, Wyoming and central Alberta.

Natural History:
This species is widespread (eurytopic) and found in most habitats from sea level to above timberline in open country, supratidal meadows, deciduous and coniferous forest, and synanthropic sites.
