Historical Note: Graduate Studies at The Evergreen State College began with the Master of Public Administration Degree Program in 1980. The Masters of Environmental Studies programs inception was also in 1980 but classes began only in 1984. Faculty for the program are listed below:

History: (Paraphrased from Mary Rose Livingston's introduction to the Sixth Annual Forum). "In Academic 1989/90 MES Graduate Student Eli Sterling conceived the idea to take the work students were doing in the MES program, get it out of the classroom and into the community. The name Rachel Carson Environmental Forum was chosen because Rachel Carson was the best bridge between science and policy making - and a hero for our time"
