HEAT: Today I went to Mylee’s HEAT group and helped out with the kids making nature hats/crowns. There was  not that many children, and the ones that were there knew each other. Since it was super bowl Sunday, a few of the kids were into making super bowl crowns.  Over all it was enjoyable and mad e me want to come back and help again. I enjoyed making my own crown, and at snack time we all went out side and had a parade in red square.
Feb. 10, 2006 Roosevelt Elementary School Roosevelt Art: Had our first Art lesson today at the school. It was mainly directed by Marja. I introduced the animals, some of the kids were scared, but most were very interested and curious. We broke into our groups and started working, many of the kids did not stay focused on what their project was, but enjoyed them selves nonetheless. The teacher seemed very over whelmed, not in control of her students, and Marja seemed distracted as well. I did not really enjoy myself, little kids are not my specialty. I found it hard also being so close under Marja’s eye.

Yelm: Went and visited my old art teacher from high school and sat in on a couple of his classes. Found it interesting and reflected on old times with the way he is able to joke around with the kids. I am sure some of his lingo is not appropriate, but every one knows that he is in good spirits when he jokes with the kids. One thing that caught my eye was for punishment if they were later to class was to do extra art work, at home and if they were in serious trouble they had to do art history papers. Now I don't even like art history, but this seems like a punishment that would make them not like art.

HEAT: Today was my chance for a lesson plan, I decided to make stepping stones with the children. I purchased a 50 lb bag of fast setting quick crete from my work, rocks, stones, gems, food coloring, and mixing and holding containers. Overall the activity went well, the only problem is that it was a very fast project and the kids needed something to do afterwards. Luckily Ben was there and we all went over to the REC center and played on the huge bouncy balls! Thanks Ben! =)
Feb. 25/26, 2006 Oregon, Hillsboro Reptile and Exotic animal convention Oregon: I drove down with my friend Keith Brady to help him manage his tables for Snakemakers. I made coloring sheets for the kids to learn different things about the animals and have fun at the same time. Did some bird counting as well, saw 3 Bald eagles, 26 Red-tailed hawks, 1 kesteral, 1 ruff legged hawk, 1 perigrin falcon, and 1 great blue herron! These were all just along the side of the freeway on the drive down and back.

On Saturday I arrived at school and met up with a couple of my friends who were walking around red square. They were just starting to set up things in the square, so we helped some of the people that my friends knew, brought stuff from their cars and other places that needed to be set up.

Since we in the area, we walked around and talked to all of the different people in red square. One table that I particularly liked had several prints of photographs form sale heirloom tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables. They were and organization that went around and gathered all of the fruits and vegetables that were not going to be used for one reason or another.

There was another table that had beautiful dresses and shirts and other clothing for sale. They were linked with a coalition of women out of Afghanistan, around 20 women that made these clothes specifically for use, we go there and pay them directly and bring back the product. Some of the cotton shirts were sooo soft and finely made, they called the Buddha shirts, for they were the kind of material that he would have made for himself.

I went to Marisha Auerback’s “Creating Perma-nent Culture” lecture. At first she had us pair up as buddies and gave us each a 3X5 index card. We each took one side and had to write about how we were a resource in the community.
I put things like:
- great source of information about plants and animals
- take in unwanted animals
- artistic
- great sense of humor
Then a time when we felt connected to out community, I put that when I had done class room/HEAT types of things, that I was helping the children and felt a connection there. She had a slide show of all different ideas about permaculture and showed a few ideas communities had of changing their intersection into something community oriented.

In red square there was a band that was really good, I watched them for a while, talked to some of the vendors, bought a hand-crafted ring, then watched the beginning of the Procession of the Plants down to the organic farm. Also, they were building their water serpent out of sticks and had little huts from the sticks and branches that were very unique, and fun to watch them make. They had a hard time previously with them blowing away!
Overall I learned that are many people with several ideas for sustainable living, permaculture types of gardening and community awareness, and people just wanting to better for the community, environment, and for their neighbors. If there were more things like this, in our schools and more common knowledge, I think that many communities could benefit from something like this. If you live in an area and plan to be there for the rest of your life, why not want to make it the best place to live, and get to know your neighbors!
