Fall Quarter began with the entire program embarking on a field trip to Ft. Flagler,
Port Townsend, and various small towns on the Olympic Penninsula. The trip provided
a chance for students to start collecting the stories of the Pacific Northwest, by
way of locals in small towns, and explore the natural history through a hike in the
Skokomish River Valley. Guest speakers such as Tom Jay and Alice Derry introduced the class
to the poetry of the northwest, which was studied intensely over the quarter. Through
poetry, novels, lectures and field studies, students learned of the history of the region
and the present status of its literary community. Students kept a journal of natural
history and observations, wrote essays about poems and poems about essays, and interviewed
a poet of their choice for the Anthology Project. |
