The use of mosses by horticulturists presents pressure on primary forests, from which mosses are extracted. As part of an effort to learn how to "farm" mosses, we will design ways to understand how best to cultivate mosses in small "moss gardens".
Working in small groups and as a whole team, students will investigate how to best grow mosses outside of their habitat for the gift/horticulture market. We will collect mosses from the Olympic National Forest, and then set up a set of growth experiments in small pots. Students will determine watering and care regimes to maximize the longevity and health of the moss.
