Title IX

Details:

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is very similar to Title VI. It states that "no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

Applications and Implications:

  • Title IX applies to everything an education program does, not only the aspect under which the program receives federal funds.
  • Title IX can be enforced through lawsuit by both federal agencies and private individuals.
  • Title IX applies to admission tests, athletic programs, codes of conduct, counseling materials regarding course or occupation selection, and rules concerning marriages or pregnancies.
