Elementary Math and Science Gradeband
Winter/Spring 2008
Wednesdays 9-12
- Texts:
- Marek, Edmund A. (1997). The Learning Cycle Elementary School Science and Beyond. Revised Edition. Heinemann. ISBN: 0-435-07133-5.
- Van De Walle, John. 2004. Elementary and Middle School Mathematics. Teaching Developmentally. 6th Edition. Pearson Education. ISBN: 020538689X
- Check out from the library or borrow from your practicum school an elementary mathematics and an elementary science text. You may be able to find one at a used bookstore cheap.
- Some Notes:
- We will be working on math and science methods for two quarters. Every other week the emphasis will shift from one to the other. Generally speaking each class will consist of a 2 - 3 hour workshop on either math or science with the remainder of the time spent on the other. You should bring both text to class each week.
- We will be following the order of the chapters in the text with a few exceptions to fit the needs of other aspects of the program as well as specific requirements from the state.
- You will create a resource web site on using electronic technology to enhance the teaching of math and science. See handout.
- Link to Project Page
- The math text is divided into two sections. The first section is about philosophy and foundations of mathematics education. The second is more about how you can teach the various topics in mathematics.
- The science text is about developing a framework in which science content is taught with applications.
Note that there will be specific assignments to go along with the readings. They will be added later and also disussed in class prior to being made.
