Nature Journal Week VI: Event Maps

Nature:  Image and Object
Week VI Nature Journal Assignment
Due:  Wednesday May 7

In A Trail Through Leaves, Hinchman writes about bringing nature to life by recording your observations as a series of events rather than as a sequence of dead objects. “An event map is an actual map, in that it traces your route through a landscape, as you encounter it (p. 156).” Walk around your site.  Be alert as to what catches your attention.  As you find something interesting, make a drawing of it.  You could use pencils or pen and your color medium.  If you are short on time, take color notes.  Add measurements to the drawings as appropriate.  Add words that describe what is happening or what has happened. Use all of your senses.  Make your use of words vivid and specific.  Make notes about what questions arise in your mind.    Think about adding arrows or dotted lines to indicate your movement on the map.  Some of the drawings may include the larger landscape while others may focus on detail.  Your task this week is to create a series of event maps that span ten sheets of your nature journal.  In doing this work, please think about the composition of the pages so that you make good use of both the positive and negative space.
