TESC Atlas Project

Nature:  Image and Object
TESC Atlas Assignment
Due:  Friday May 9, 2008

As a class project, we are going to create an atlas of maps of The Evergreen State College experience.  From reading Harmon’s You Are Here:  Personal Geographies and Other Maps of the Imagination, you can see that a map can document a range of experiences:

    a.  Communicate exact geography
    b.  Communicate physical sensations of a place (pages 75, 88, 89)
    c.  Communicate human values and emotions
(e.g. the road to success)  (see pages 46-47)
    d. Make political commentary (see page 132-3)
    e.  Express prayers for healing
    f.  Map the imagination (see pages 42-3)
    g.  Communicate future projects and plans
    h.  Explore memories  (see page 131)
    i.   Document the behavior of social groups (see pages 104-107)

Your task is to make a map of some aspect of your experience at The Evergreen State College.  It could describe a particular place:  your site, your walk to class, our studio, etc.  It could describe the events of an actual experience you had on campus.  It could explore your observations about particular groups of students.  It could map your dreams for the campus.

Since we are going to bind the book as a class project we have to observe different conventions that will ease in the reproduction and binding of the atlas.

1.  The map must be made in black pen on white paper.  You may choose later to hand color the images later.

2.  The size must be either:  8.5 x 11”, 11 x 14” or 11 x 17”

3.  The map should include a title, your name and the date (e.g. spring 2008).

We will make 27 copies of each map on good quality paper. Each student will receive a copy of each map to bind in an atlas.  We will make one copy of the atlas to donate to the library.
