Greetings John. I enjoyed your summation of Compton's publication. I too was intriqued by the fact that money will not bring happiness, maybe unhappiness. The book backed up Dr. Hurst's comments of becoming janitors to our possessions.
I also, as you, picked up on the points of the Hedonic treadmill. The belief that the pursuit of well-being is fundamentally the pursuit of individual sensual pleasures. There's only so many times you can ride the Screaming Eagle roller coaster at 6 Flags before it's not fun anymore, and if you eat enough of those yummy Elephant Ears, you will eventually vomit it up. Eventually there will be no personal growth.
Also the summation of spirituality, religiosity, made a mark on me also. I find it interesting that the comment was made that spirituality tends to be hard-wired into our brain. Is this confirmation of a creator? :) Nah!
