Chinese, Beginning 1 & 2
This introductory Chinese course will emphasize the mastery of standard Chinese pronunciation and the building of useful vocabularies. Students with little or no prior experience will learn Chinese pinyin system and modern Mandarin Chinese through vigorous interactive practice and small group activities. The class is fast-paced with use of internet and computerized software to accelerate the learning. Chinese history and culture will be included as it relates to each language lesson.
Chinese, Advanced Beginning 1, 2, & 3
This course is designed for students who have taken beginning Chinese course or who have had at least one quarter college-level Chinese learning and are familiar with the basic grammar and Chinese pinyin system. Students will learn new sentence structures and build up additional vocabulary so they can carry on conversation in a variety of situations. Learning activities also include speaker presentations, field trips, and Chinese film and media.
Chinese, Intermediate I
This class is designed to reinforce and build upon previous skills through rigorous practice of spoken and written Chinese. Students will work to improve pronunciation while expanding understanding of vocabulary and grammatical constructions. Students will also be exposed to a variety of cultural topics through readings and other interactive activities.
Chinese, Intermediate II
This class is designed to reinforce and build upon previous skills through rigorous practice of spoken and written Chinese. Students will work to improve pronunciation while expanding understanding of vocabulary and grammatical constructions. Students will also be exposed to a variety of cultural topics through readings and other interactive activities.

China, Its Language and Culture
This unique study-abroad program allows students to experience China, the second largest economy in the world. Through a study in Shanghai, a renowned international metropolis, students will participate in a short-term summer program at the International School of Tongji University. The university experience will offer Chinese language classes, insight into Chinese culture; modern, traditional, urban, suburban and rural life. In addition, students will travel to other cities such as Nanjing, Xian, HangZhou, SuZhou, Luo Yang, and the Yellow river region, the cradle of Chinese civilization, and much more.
Students are encouraged to document the trip and continue the learning through seminars and film viewing and documentary making upon return for the remainder of the summer second session. Please see Study Abroad program tab China, Its Language and Culture for more information.
