Major Assignments

Further details about these major assignments are available in separate documents, accessible on Moodle. Other major assignments, those for special education and specific methods strands, are described in the various individual syllabi, available on Moodle as well.

Weekly Seminar Preparation Papers

You will write one entry each week in preparation for the Monday afternoon seminars. These are due at 11 PM the Sunday preceeding the seminar. A document describing the purposes and expectations for these preparation papers is available on Moodle.

Curriculum Project

During weeks 1-6 you will develop a two-week integrative, interdisciplinary, conceptually-based unit, built around a guiding question that includes the concept of sustainability and that promotes equity, embraces diversity, develops critical and creative thinking. This unit is one that might conceivably be used during student teaching. This unit should be developed through a backwards design (UbD) planning strategy as discussed in Wiggins and McTighe’s Understanding by Design, and will address standards in the Washington State Pedagogy Assessment TPA (Teacher Performance Assessment) and Standard V found in WAC 181-78A-270. The lesson plans developed will reflect “best practice” and meet Washington State criteria for successfully demonstrating a positive impact on student learning.

Practicum Teaching (Mini-Unit)

During week 9, May 24-27, you will be teaching for three days for at least 30 minutes (ideally longer) each day. Goals for this teaching experience include providing opportunities for you to: teach one concept through multiple lessons, become familiar with the new state Teacher Performance Assessment, the TPA (you will complete many parts of the TPA) and become familiar with Evergreen’s own Student Teaching Assessment.

Advancement to Student Teaching Portfolio

This portfolio will be a culmination and synthesis of your work during year one of this program and will be worked on throughout this quarter. It will provide evidence of what you know about teaching and learning; your teacher disposition towards your work, your students and your colleagues; and what you can do in the areas of lesson planning, and curriculum development.

Keeping Your Work

Protect your computer-based work by always backing it up (storing it in at least two places). Your printed and hand written needs to be kept through at least the end of the quarter.
