Major Assignments

Further details about each of these major assignments may be available in separate documents, accessible on Moodle. Other major assignments not listed below, for the Literacy and Elementary Science strands, are described elsewhere.

Weekly Seminar Preparation Papers
You will write one entry each week in preparation for our Monday morning seminars. These are due at 11:00 PM the Sunday preceding the seminar. A document describing the purposes and expectations for these preparation papers is available on Moodle.

Research Paper
You will write two versions of a research paper, the second version building on the first, centered on a question of your choice connected with your group’s assigned “microculture.” The first version is due week 4; a second, longer version, is due week 8. In developing this paper you will identify a specific question and then draw ideas from journal articles that inform that question. Along with introducing your question, three articles (some of which need to be peer reviewed research articles) will be cited in the week 4 version (3-4 pages) and a total of ten sources will be cited in the week 8 version (8-10 pages).

Lesson Plan Website
You will create and regularly add to a website that shares several of the lesson plans you develop this quarter along with post-teaching reflections from those lessons and a short video of your peer teaching. This website will be created using WordPress and will be published through your blogs.evergreen.edu account. Name this website with your last name followed by lessonplans (for example: blogs.evergreen.edu/colemanlessonplans).

Multicultural Rubric
You will create a two-page rubric for teaching for social justice that reflects your understanding of how to integrate multiculturalism into all of your teaching practices. This will be due week 8.

Multicultural Project Presentation
Your group will lead a 50 minute presentation to the class, sharing and discussing your findings about your designated microculture, during either week 9 or 10.

Multicultural Project Website
As a small group you will develop a website to share the resources you have located about your microculture, including such information as: curricular resources, teaching strategies, ideas for home-school-community partnerships, ideas for school advocacy. The website will also include each group member’s week 8 paper and resources (such as notes, images and video clips) shared during the group’s end-of-quarter multicultural project presentation.

Multicultural Project Video
As a small group you will develop a 5-10 minute video, to be recorded in the CCAM studio (during a two hour slot of out-of-class time, Monday week 7: 3-5 or Thursday week 7: 3-5 or Thursday week 8: 3-5), sharing reflections about your group’s findings. This video will be shown during your presentations to the class at the end of the quarter.

Peer Teaching: Integrating the Arts
Weeks 4-9 you will have 3 opportunities to teach lessons you have planned that include integrating the arts into your content area. You will write and submit lesson plans for each lesson and teach the lesson.

ELL Case Study
You will interview an English Language Learner and/or his/her family (K-adult),  chronicling the day-to day life of an English Language Learner and his/her family, writing a case study, and creating a presentation.

ELL Content Area Curriculum Unit
For the final project for the ELL strand you will develop a total of 5 lesson plans using a backward design template.

Field Experience Journal/Portfolio
During your field experience, you will create a reflective journal/portfolio, documenting the things you learn, do and reflect upon. You have the flexibility to make this very personal to your individual practicum experience.

End of Quarter Portfolio

In addition to turning in assignments when they are first due, you will be submitting your collected work to your seminar faculty at the end of the quarter. We will provide you with a list of items to be included and a description of how they should be organized several days before each portfolio due date.

Self-Evaluation

Your on-going self-evaluation is an integral part of this program. You will be required to submit a self-evaluation at the end of the quarter.

Reminder: Keeping Your Work

Protect your computer-based work by always backing it up (storing it in at least two places). Your printed and hand written needs to be kept through at least the end of the quarter.
