Bradycellus Overview

Genus Bradycellus, Erichson 1837

Identification:
A heterogeneous genus containing small species (2.8 - 6.8mm), usually bicolored and with no pubescence on the upper surface of the body. Penultimate labial palpomere bisetose anteriorly; mentum with distinct tooth on anterior margin medially; pronotum with basolateral setae absent; elytron without short scattered setae laterally or apically; the eight posterior most umbilicate setae on ninth interval not distinctly divided into two separate groups of four setae; legs short; first segment of meta-tarsus always shorter than second and third together; last tarsal segment with at least one pair of bristles underneath, except in lecontei and badipennis group.

Range:
Holarctic with a few species in the northern portion of the Neotropical region.

Natural History:
Thirty species found in North America. Most species are primarily herbivorous, inhabiting open country.
