Overview of Genus Leistus, Frölich 1799

Identification:
Lateroventral margin of maxilla with several long finger like projections each with a long, stout spine inserted apically. Form and arrangement of spines and curticular extensions of the ventral aspect of the head and mouthparts form a distinctive basket like enclosure (collembola trap).

Range:
Holarctic.

Natural History:
Four species represented in North America, one of which is a European introduction. Springtails and other small insects and mites form the bulk of the adult and larval diet.
